  Chapter One

  Carina

  I still couldn’t believe I was doing this.

  But here goes nothing, I kept thinking, all during my trip out here.

  I left Manhattan on a gray snowy day and arrived in L.A. where there were blue skies and ninety-degree weather. Traveling was weird that way. And deep down I was hoping that the change in weather was a good sign, like a sign that every part of the next two days would go perfectly.

  High school reunions were tough. Especially when you were bullied in school as much as I was. But I had a plan to instantly boost my reputation and get back at those mean girls from high school, and I was pretty sure it was going to work.

  I hoped it was going to work, anyway.

  Butterflies were in my stomach as I looked out the window at LAX.

  Over the years, growing up here, I had grown tired of it. I know, right? You’d think the place where they make movies and celebrities grow on trees would be interesting, but really, Los Angeles can be dull.

  You get used to the nice weather and famous people are just actors. Sure, some of them have millions of dollars, but lots of people do. They’re no different than you or me.

  At the end of the day, it was all about who you were surrounded by. Sure, I had a few good friends growing up, but I didn’t fit in with all the beautiful L.A. people.

  So, I left, telling myself that I wanted something a little more exciting.

  Going to college in Manhattan, I learned to love New York. Once I got my teaching degree, I slid right into a teaching position at a private school. For the first year, it was a blast. By the end of the second year, I started to burnout.

  Don’t get me wrong, I still love teaching, but the hectic intensity began to wear me down. Plus, after six winters in New York City, I was tired of sloshing through snow.

  Needless to say, when my high school reunion came up, I jumped at the chance to get out of town for a few days. Vicky, my best friend from high school, offered up a room at her place for the first night of my stay and I couldn’t say no. There was just one problem.

  Since I hadn’t been very popular in high school, attending the reunion was going to be a big deal to me. I wanted to show all the mean girls and bullies that I had made a life for myself, but other than having a successful carrier, I hadn’t.

  Not a single man had come into my life in years. Somewhere along the way — after tons of awful dates — I had given up on relationships. But going to my reunion alone was not an option. That was why I had a plan.

  The moment I stepped out of LAX, the California sun was like a welcomed hug from an old friend. I hopped into my Uber and headed to Vicky’s place. My Uber driver was chatty, but he was a local, so I didn’t mind.

  “Hey, I’m Carlos,” he greeted. “What brings you to town, Carina?”

  “High school reunion,” I told him. “Ten years.”

  “Aw, those are fun,” he smiled. “I just had mine a few years back. It was so much fun catching up with the old gang.” He looked a bit dreamy eyed for a minute, but then shook himself and glanced at me through the rearview mirror. “Where are you coming from?”

  “Manhattan. I missed the sun,” I said, looking out the window and watching the palm trees zip by.

  Carlos nodded. “There’s nothing like it. Once you get used to all this sun, it’s hard to stay away.”

  We pulled into Vicky’s neighborhood. She and her husband, Jim, had just moved into this place last summer and I had never been here before. The houses were massive.

  Well, for L.A., they were massive. It was so expensive to live here already. A regular two bedroom could be a million dollars, depending on the location.

  A mini-mansion like Vicky’s? Well, it was safe to say that her husband’s law firm was doing well.

  Carlos pulled up into the driveway of a Spanish style home with creamy white walls and red tiles on the roof. There was a fountain in the middle of the driveway’s loop. Between that and the landscaping, the place looked like a photo out of a magazine.

  Vicky, with her toddler, James, in her arms, rushed out the door to greet me.

  We hadn’t seen each other since James was born, but Vicky still looked the same. I had always been envious of her red hair and big brown eyes. They were bright and pretty, not like my dull brown hair and normal blue eyes.

  Unlike me, Vicky was beautiful. The only thing that kept her from being a model when we were younger was that her nose was a bit too big.

  Most people in L.A. would have gone right to the plastic surgeon, but not my confident best friend. She just laughed it off and said that her nose was what made her unique.

  Well, that, and her bubbly personality.

  I got out of the Uber.

  “Oh, my God!” Vicky squealed. “It’s so good to see you.”

  “You too,” I smiled. “And this little guy.”

  “Say hi, James,” his mother urged.

  James buried his face in his mother’s shoulder, too shy. The little guy was the spitting image of his father, with black hair and the biggest green eyes I had ever seen.

  “He’ll get used to you,” his mother assured me. “Let me help you with your bags.”

  “Oh, no, I got it,” I said, taking my bag from Carlos. “Thanks, Carlos. You get a five star.”

  “Thank you, enjoy your stay,” grinned Carlos, getting back into his car.

  Inside Vicky’s place was really nice. It was ten bedrooms and looked expertly decorated. Vicky admitted that she had done the interiors herself and I was surprised, since the place seemed to be on the cutting edge.

  She showed me to the guest room, which had its own bath. Everything in the room, from the furniture, to the fixtures, looked antique and expensive. On some level, I was afraid to touch anything.

  “Why don’t you get washed up and relax?” suggested Vicky. “You’re probably wiped after that flight. I’m going to put James down for a little nap and get dinner started.”

  “Thanks, Sweetie.”

  “No problem! Anything for my bestie,” she added, giving me a quick hug.

  She took James out of the room and I shut and locked the door behind them.

  Part one of my plan, getting here, was done. Now to make sure part two was ready. Taking out my phone, I immediately texted Leo.

  “Touched down. I’m at my friend’s place,” I texted. “You still good to go?”

  A few seconds later, a picture of Leo’s handsome face popped up on my phone. He was so hot, even a picture made me blush. I couldn’t wait to meet him in person.

  I had done something I didn’t want anyone to find out about. Unable to face the reunion alone, I had hired an escort to pretend to be my fiancé. It was crazy, but I couldn’t think of what else to do and there was no way I was going to the reunion alone — and admitting to being the loser that I was.

  I had found the number for the escort service while I was in New York. Luckily, they had a branch in L.A. too. Leo was from Santa Barbara, so I didn’t have to fly him in, just get him a hotel room.

  For fifteen hundred dollars, he was going to pretend to love me for a night. I was hoping that was a good deal. Since I’d never done anything like this and had no idea.

  “Yes, of course,” Leo responded to my text. “I have you scheduled, and I have memorized the facts you emailed me.”

  “Good,” I replied. “I’ll see you soon and thanks.”

  I knew that the deal probably didn’t include sex, although I still wasn’t sure how it all worked. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder if I would get to see his toned, muscular chest naked.

  Maybe he would pick me up and carry me to the bed. His cock was probably as big as his hands made me guess it would be, and I just knew I’d be so wet for him because even his picture on my phone screen was so hot.

  I told myself to quit lusting after him. This was a business transaction only.

  After a quick shower and a freshening up, I looked around the
rest the house. The smell of Vicky’s stir fry permeated the air as I passed through the living room. There was a grand piano that held framed pictures of Jim and Vicky’s friends.

  I nearly fell over when I spotted a familiar face.

  There in a group of several guys was a devastatingly handsome man. I blinked, not understanding, but I still saw the same bright green eyes and slightly long blonde hair that I had been looking at minutes ago. In this picture, he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt with a law school logo on the breast and I could see his muscular arms.

  It was Leo, my escort.

  “Oh shit,” I said aloud.

  “What’s wrong?” called Vicky from the kitchen.

  “Oh, nothing,” I said, regaining my composure. “I’m just looking at some of the pictures you have on display here on the piano. Is this family?”

  “No, most of those are on the mantle,” explained Vicky. “Those are Jim’s friends from law school. Some he met while going to school and some he met when he went back to give speeches.”

  Oh, my God.

  Jim and Vicky already know Leo!

  Chapter Two

  Leo

  Working as an escort always felt kind of sleazy to me. The only reason I did it was because people were paying good money and it’s just so damned expensive to live in California. Once I made some inroads at a law firm and passed the bar, I could put it all behind me, but for now it was great money.

  Most of my clients would treat me like a piece of meat, but I knew Carina, my latest client, wasn’t like that. She had hired me to pose as her fiancé at her high school reunion.

  Carina seemed so sweet – which surprised me, since most girls as hot as she looked didn’t always have a good heart to match – but she told me over text that she had been incredibly shy around boys in high school and she had also been bullied and now, nothing seemed to work for her in the relationship department and she would, apparently, rather die that attend this thing single.

  I understood and agreed to take the job. I wanted the money, but I also wanted to help. The poor girl thought she needed a reputation boost, but I could tell she also needed a confidence boost.

  Not that she had any reason to be. Carina had sent me a photo, so I could recognize her when we met up, and from what I saw, she had the looks of the perfect girl next door. With a heart shaped face with pink cheeks and bright blue eyes, I didn’t get why she was alone.

  But really, it wasn’t my problem, I kept having to remind myself. This was just a job.

  Working as an escort also made me reevaluate my past carousing. The love ‘em and leave ‘em Leo was far in the past now. After getting a taste of my own medicine, I understood what it was like, so I figured, for now, it was best to be single.
